Actual speed is the total time until everything is loaded. Perceived speed is how fast the page feels.

If I show above-the-fold content quickly and then load secondary content later, users often perceive the experience as fast, even if background work continues. Optimizing for perception (early paint, skeleton screens, meaningful above-the-fold content) can be as important as raw load time.


Optimizing Images: The Most Common and Costly Mistake

Images are almost always the largest assets on a typical page. I have seen sites where a single hero image was larger than the rest of the page combined. That is usually unnecessary.

Each image format exists for a reason. I try to match my format to the job.

If there is a single common culprit in slow websites today, it is often JavaScript. Libraries, frameworks, analytics, widgets—each kilobyte adds up and each script can block the main thread.

Audit and Question Every Script

I periodically make a list of every script loaded on my site:

High TTFB typically signals:

  • Slow backend logic (database queries, heavy server-side processing).
  • Poorly configured caching.

  • Caching rendered HTML where possible (full-page caching for non-personalized pages).
  • Optimizing database access with indexes, query tuning, and avoiding unnecessary calls.

Caching is one of the most effective optimizations because it prevents work from happening repeatedly.

  • Complex scroll-based animations that rely on continuous JavaScript execution.
  • Heavy DOM trees (thousands of nodes) that make layout and repaint slow.
  • Overuse of position: fixed elements which complicate paint and compositing.

I periodically profile on mobile to observe actual frame rates and responsiveness.


Managing Third-Party Scripts: The Hidden Performance Sink

Third-party scripts can be seductive: analytics, tag managers, A/B testing, chat widgets, social embeds. Each promises value; together, they often sabotage performance.

Evaluate Cost vs. Benefit Ruthlessly

I list each third-party script and ask:

  • Does this directly support a core business or user goal?
  • Can I accomplish the same insight or functionality in a lighter way?
  • Can I defer loading until after initial render or after user interaction?

Examples:

  • Load chat widgets only after a user clicks “Chat with us.”
  • Use server-side analytics (where possible) instead of heavy client-side suites.
  • Replace social media embeds with static links or lighter versions.
