But underneath that straightforward experience, a complicated sequence of dependencies holds together:

  • DNS must resolve correctly.
  • Network paths between me and the server must be available.
  • The data center must have power, cooling, and physical security.
  • The host’s hardware must be healthy and monitored.
  • The OS must be patched and stable.
  • Web server, runtime, and database must be configured and cooperative.
  • My application’s code must behave reasonably under load.
  • Caching, if used, must do more good than harm.
  • Backups must exist in case any of the above fail catastrophically.

Web hosting “behind the scenes” is this continuous negotiation between fragility and redundancy, between complexity and abstraction. As a site owner, I do not need to obsess over every layer, but I am better off when I understand enough to:
